Artesia High School was established in the 1954 and 1955 school year, opening its doors to freshman and sophomore classes only and is the oldest active high school in the ABC Unified School District. The opening ceremony speech was given Richard Nixon who was the Vice President of the United States at that time. His speech highlighted his hopes and aspirations of the school would be an example of educational integration since the Brown versus Board of Education ruling had just passed. Originally, the school was located in the city of Artesia, however, the area was annexed to the City of Lakewood in 1967. The school adopted the Pioneer as its mascot and is currently home to 1415 students. Artesia High School is part of the ABC Unified School District which serves 21000 students.
